Srilankan cricket team attacked by militants

Srilankan players are currently touring pakistan for playing cricket matches and the test series is going on now.Unidentified gunmen attacked the bus carrying the cricketers to Gaddafi stadium in the city it is believed to be there were a dozen of militants with Kalashnikov rifles and rocket launchers and they opened fire on the bus carrying the srilankan cricketers.

Six srilankan players were injured and five of their bodyguards killed.Among the players who were injured are captain Mahela Jayawardene , Kumar Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis ,Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavitana.

Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavitana were hospitalized.Initial reports said the attackers came in a white car and reportedly surrounded the bus at Liberty Chowk in the heart of the city and first fired rockets at the bus and then they started firing the security guards.City police chief Haji Habibur Rehman said two Sri Lankan cricketers were hit by bullets, one in the chest and another in the leg and five policemen died in the attack.

Umpire Ahsan Raza was seriously injured in the incident.Hours after the attack, authorities defused two car bombs before they could explode and recovered a stash of weapons.Srilankan tour has been called off and ” Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa in a message from Nepal said: “The Sri Lankan players had gone to Pakistan as ambassadors of goodwill.”

He instructed immediate orders of bringing back all the srilankan team members.And this attack has raised many questions of the security concerns in pakistan and tournaments taking place in future and it spoiled the spirit of the game .

The attack has took place three months after the Mumbai terror attacks, which were allegedly carried out by Pakistan militants.
